I’m usually on the phone or working at my computer. Sometimes I get uncomfortable because I’m not moving much. That’s why I my favorite time of the day is my lunch break. After eating, I take a walk with my coworkers and gossip about the latest celebrities. We have a nice park behind the office where we like to take a walk. Even though we don’t have much time, we try to stay active. It’s nice to be out of the office and get some fresh air.

5. You answered in the survey that you go to sports games. Tell me about the game you’ve ever seen. What made it so great?

Last summer, I went to a baseball game with my friends. Two of them were American, and it was their first Korean baseball game. My American friends, Tom and Jerry, were fascinated by the Korean cheerleaders. Korean people are very engaged during the game. However it’s not the same in America. They generally like to just sit quietly and watch the game. Also, there are no cheerleaders in American baseball games. They had a great time. After the game, Tom took several pictures with the pretty cheerleaders. He seemed really excited about that. That was the most fun I have had in years.

6. Let’s talk about the process of attending a game in your country. Describe it in detail from getting the tickets to when the game finishes.

The first step in watching a game is to buy tickets. I usually buy them online because then I can pick front row seats. Then, I print out the e-tickets from my computer. On the game day, I arrive about 30 minutes before the game. Once I arrive, I take the e-ticket to the counter and exchange it for the actual ticket.  After that, I buy some food and drinks. At baseball games, I like to eat chicken and beer. When the game starts, I cheer for my favorite players while I eat. Finally, at the end of the game, I beat the crowd to go back home.

7. I’m going to give you a situation and ask you to act it out. You and your friends are going to a soccer game tonight, but it suddenly begins to rain very hard. Call the ticket office and ask three and four questions concerning whether there will be any changes to the game.

Hello? I’m a person who booked tickets for the game tonight. My friends and I were about to head over to the stadium and it just started to rain like crazy. We checked the Internet and it indicated that it’s supposed to rain all night. Will the game still go on or will be canceled? I see. That’s disappointing. Then do you know the new date of the rescheduled match? Do we need to get a rain check or can we just use our old tickets? Can I get a refund of it? Where do they go to get the refund? Okay. Thank you for the information.

8. Let’s talk about swimming. What’s the main reason you go swimming? How often do you go swimming? Tell me all the details.

Last year, one of my friends fell into a swimming pool. She didn’t know how to swim. I wanted to save her, but I couldn’t either. I was scared because I didn’t know what to do. Luckily, a lifeguard pulled her out of the water in time. That’s when I decided to take swimming lessons. I started 2 years ago, and I still go to the pool twice a week. It was pretty difficult in the beginning. I swallowed a lot of water. But I kept practicing and now I’ve learned all of the major strokes. I’ll definitely be ready to help when someone is drowning.

9.  Many people enjoy swimming and jogging. Compare and contrast swimming and jogging.

Overall, swimming has more requirements, while jogging is simpler. First of all, when you swim, you can’t multitask at all. Second, you need a swimming pool and a swimming suit to go swimming. Finally, you must take swimming classes before swimming alone. This is because you can drown if you aren’t careful. One the other hand, when you jog, you can listen to music or talk to a friend. You can jog anywhere at anytime. Also you can wear whatever you want. There are no skills needed for jogging. A similarity between the two sports is that they are both aerobic exercises, and both exercise the whole body. They are both great ways to lose weight and become healthy.

10. Now, let’s talk about a popular holiday in your country. What is the history of the holiday? What traditional activities do people do during the holiday?

A popular holiday in my country is Korean Thanksgiving, Chuseok.
It began as a harvest celebration in the fall. It’s always on August 15th of the lunar calendar. One Chuseok tradition is for the whole family reunion in their hometown. I love this time because I can see all my relatives. Another tradition is to visit ancestor’s graves and offer a food sacrifice. Afterward, we gather together to eat the food talking about our ordinary life. I can eat many different kinds of food and share my life with family.

11. Choose a holiday and discuss how the celebrations have changed over the years. Compare the past and present. What thinks are the same? What things are different?

Chuseok has changed a lot over the years. When I was young, my family always visited our grandparent’s house. All of my relatives gathered together. It was a great time because I could play with all my relatives. However these days, some of my relatives don’t come. Sometimes they travel with their family or friends, or they stay home to spend their holidays relaxing. One thing that has never changed is that we still eat Songpyeon. I don’t like it that much but I always try to grab many because my mom always makes them a lot for us. That’s it.

12. I’d like to give you a situation that you need to role play. Imagine your foreign friend has invited you to celebrate a traditional holiday of his/her country. Ask him/her three or four questions about the holiday.

Hello? Is this Brian?
Hey, it’s me Juseok, thanks for inviting me to your party!
Do you have a minute to talk?
I’m calling to ask you some questions about your party.
Okay, Q,1,2,3,4,5,

What kind of party is that? Is it a casual party?
Are jeans okay?
Do you have any dress code?
Should I dress up? (=Should I wear a suit?)
Are you going to prepare any food?
Is that something like a potluck party?
Should I bring anything?
What kind of dishes do you have on that day?
Could you tell me what foods are good for the party?
Where do I have to go?(=Where is the party held?)
What time does the party start and end?
Can I bring my friends there?
I see, see you there soon! Bye!

13. I’d like to know about the seasons in your country. Describe in detail the characteristics of each season.

There are four seasons in Korea. Spring lasts from March to May. The weather is warm and the plants start blooming. You can see colorful flowers everywhere. Summer is from June to August. It has two parts: a rainy part and a hot humid part. The rainy season happens in June and July and it rains a lot. Sometimes it even floods. After that when it stops raining, the weather gets very hot and humid. We go to water parks and beaches to cool off. In September, autumn begins. It’s harvest time, so that’s when we celebrate Chuseok. The air becomes cool and all the leaves change colors. Finally the winter comes in December. Winter is very dry and cold. It always snows, and the river freezes. I love watching seasons change!

14. How has the weather changed over the years in your country? What do you think causes climate change? How has it affected people’s lives?

In Korea, the climate has changed a lot. I think the weather has become more extreme. Now the summers are hotter with more rain, and the winters are colder with more snow. When I was a kid, it wasn’t like this. Last summer, we had record amounts of rain. There was flooding in Seoul. I think humans cause extreme weather by polluting the atmosphere. All our cities, cars, and factories make lots of pollution. These days, we also use more energy on heating and air conditioning because of the extreme weather. That causes more pollution and makes the climate change even more. If we don’t stop this cycle, I guess people’s lives are going to get worse.

15. Tell me about your favorite season. Why do you like that season? What do you do at that time? Tell me all the details.

My favorite season is spring. I like it because the plants come back to life after a long, cold winter. I love the bright green leaves and the colorful flowers. It makes the city look alive. The days start getting longer and brighter. That makes me happy. Another reason I like spring is that I can pack away my heavy winter clothes. I get so excited wearing all the fashionable spring wears. Also I can spend a lot of time outside during spring. I ride my bike, travel, and have picnics with my friends. Spring is such a happy time.
